Keeping the Faith

The Big 3, as Amy, Dawna, and Stephanie affectionately refer to ourselves, have been listening, learning, and talking about faith this month.

It’s not a new topic of conversation for us. It comes up when we’re hiking those tall mountains, as well as when we’re laughing with girlfriends over bacon and bourbon. But it is a conversation we feel worthy of sharing with all of you. Imagine Dr. King’s metaphor as Amy took the first steps of turning her dream into a reality of quality, private education for our Tanzanian friends’ children through Kilimanjaro Kidz Education Foundation. The staircase has climbed over 60 steps high with each one representing a beautiful child whom you’ve helped so far.

Now the staircase has started to become circular as we’ve entered an economy where everything just costs more than it did even a year ago. The stairs are winding back around, and we’ve asked you to pay more toward the children’s private education ($900/year or $75/month) because the tuition prices have risen. We’ve also decided to put $25 of that money toward health insurance — $25 per child for a YEAR! – as we want our kiddos to have access to simple medications or procedures they may need in order to get well and get back to school asap.

We know that some of you may not have the means or the desire to put more money towards our cause. We certainly understand and respect that. But we do have FAITH that the children’s needs will continue to be met, and we look forward to heading up an even taller staircase with you in 2023.

We Need Your Help

We have added health insurance for every student for just $25 per year, and school fees have climbed in the last year. Some secondary schools are growing by substantial amounts. And yet, for just $75/month, you are able to cover these expenses, including school supplies, uniforms, books, and transportation to and from school!

Our Kidz

Amy was fortunate to be able to travel in December to visit our families again. The school year ends in December in Tanzania, so it was a great time to reconnect, talk to the kidz, and even capture some of their thoughts on short videos! We are in the process of sending those videos to their respective sponsors, and we will be posting several up on the website as well.

Amy was able to visit two of our families at their homes. It’s amazing how much can be done with so little. The greatest joy, of course, is seeing the smiles on the faces of the children!

While there, Amy also saw some acreage that would be an ideal location for building a school. We have some steps to complete before we’re able to get that ball rolling, and, when God hands us additional clarity, we have a responsibility to take that and go forward.

Amazing Grace

The pandemic, the war in Ukraine, world financial challenges, and a lengthy drought have put a strain on the country and everything from food to transportation to tuition has been impacted. So, the Board has decided to adjust the sponsorship amount to $900 annually ($75 per month) to offset some skyrocketing costs. If you would be willing to raise your sponsorship amount, contact us!

Generosity with Attitude!

2022 has been a year of new challenges, yet we continue to move forward thanks to your generosity, compassion, and kindness.

And you all have been SO generous!

Last month we shared with you that we were halfway to our hope of 22 new sponsors in 2022. School fees must be paid by the end of October, and Kilimanjaro Kidz Education Foundation board members are feeling the crunch to achieve this milestone that we have set for helping the families of our porters. You may remember that we are a goal-oriented group – summit Mt. Kilimanjaro ✔, start a non-profit ✔, buy a company ✔, cross the continental divide on foot ✔ – you see where we’re going with this. 😉

Stephanie was having dinner with family recently when her husband shared what she’s been doing with KKEF, who we’re helping, and how. Her mother-in-law asked some wonderful questions, and Stephanie was so happy to tell her the story of KKEF. As a generous, goal-oriented woman herself, she said “Sign me up” within the next few days!

Then Stephanie went to kickboxing class and shared how happy she was that more of her family wanted to get involved in our cause, and one of her friends in the class said, “Sign me up!”

At the same time, Amy was working in Iowa and told a friend there about KKEF. She said, “Sign me up!” And the momentum has continued. We only have 6 more children who need sponsors this year!

We hope you will talk about what you’re doing to help KKEF for only $50/month or $600/year at your next family dinner, exercise class, work event, or wherever you spend time with the kind hearts in your life.

We Rise by Lifting Others

As the summer winds down and kids return to school in the U.S., our kids in Tanzania have passed their midyear mark.

Our quest continues to bring these students a future filled with opportunity.

Our Hiking Adventure

KKEF sponsors and best friends went on our annual hiking adventure the last weekend of August. We headed off to Rocky Mountain National Park at 3:00 am. Our journey, on foot, across the Continental Divide began at 4:30am at Bear Lake.

We watched an amazing Rocky Mountain sunrise as we climbed to Flattop Mountain, elevation 12,361 ft.

We shared lights in the dark, snacks at the stops, and toilet paper behind the trees and rocks.

We shared laughs, frustrations, sore feet, and singing.

We shared wonder and fear at the animal sightings, sounds and scat.

We shared awe at the beauty that has come from destruction as we hiked through a burn scar, which was vibrantly alive with wildflowers.

All along the 12-hour, 22ish mile trek from Bear Lake to Grand Lake, what we mostly shared was love for each other and the loveliness of our surroundings.

We couldn’t have completed this trek without each other, and why would we want to?

We rise by lifting others. And the same holds true in our journey of sponsorship with Kilimanjaro Kidz Education Foundation. We couldn’t have made it this far without all of you. And we continue to need your help in making our goal of 22 sponsored children in 2022.

We’re halfway there, but the children need the chance for laughs, snack sharing, awe of beauty and lifelong friendships in their sponsored private school education. Only $50 a month can help these children to rise.
