This December, my time with our families and students was complete affirmation of why we do what we do.
I arrived with an entire bag filled with gifts – each one a tangible expression of love from people who care deeply about these children and support the mission of Kilimanjaro Kidz.
A group of women in Illinois who quilt had sent stuffed animals, blankets, notebook holders, and even three deflated soccer balls—complete with pumps. A dear friend in Texas knitted tiny octopi, each with its own adoption certificate.
At our Family Gatherings (one in Arusha and one in Moshi, because our families live in villages near and far), the children were invited to choose one item. They considered carefully, and the youngest were respectfully given the chance to decide first. Every single child walked away with a gift in hand and a big smile.
But the heart of our time together came when the kids reported in.
One by one, they brought forward their report cards. They showed me their grades and confirmed that they had advanced to the next school year. And in that moment – not as a holiday gift, but as recognition of effort, each student was handed a U.S. $20 bill.
This was a reward; an acknowledgment; and our way of saying: your hard work matters.
There were hugs. Happy tears. Laughter. Parents shared stories about how much their children love school – how eager they are to learn, how proud they feel wearing their uniforms, how education has shifted the hope and tone of their homes. Frankly, I wish our student population in the U.S. had this level of deep happiness around getting to go to school, and in a uniform, no less!
For me, this time was completely soul-restoring. These gatherings confirmed what we already believe: we are needed, we are appreciated, and what you make possible is changing lives in deeply human ways. Thank you for walking this journey with us.
